THE NEED FOR INSURANCE

Insurance is a very important issue for farmers' markets in Alberta. All approved farmers' markets, regardless of size, must obtain liability insurance. Failure to obtain insurance will lead to the market approval status being revoked. Insurance is a cost of doing business in today's marketplace. Should an accident happen, the whole program could be at risk.

Liability issues resulting in lawsuits are becoming more common. Encourage your vendors to carry their own liability insurance policies as well and obtain certificates of insurance or copy of the letter showing their participation in the Alberta Farmers' Market Association (AFMA) policy.

In 2006, AFMA was pleased to introduce liability coverage for Directors and Officers of the Non-Profit Associations which must be affiliated to Alberta Approved Farmers' Markets. As with the Vendor and Market policies, this ND&O policy is underwritten by the Co-operators. This ND&O policy is an essential tool for releasing Directors of the Board from most personal liability.

VENDOR INSURANCE COVERAGE

As vendors are not covered under the market's group policy, it is strongly recommended that vendors carry their own liability insurance. Vendors should call their insurance agents to find out what level of coverage is right for them.
